Still hasn't dropped a set all tournament. No smiles from Federer - his mind is firmly set on Sunday's final against Rafael Nadal. The final everyone wanted. Nadal v Federer at 1730 GMT. Can't wait.

Comix and Cartoons: Semiotics experiment with Schulz's Peanuts and Good ol' Charlie Brown

See, I found this image -- a 12-panels narrataive comix-strip for daily noozmedia, print and digital -- I found the page on the blog Faith and Theology, so I'll have faith that they got their facts and theology correct r+t, and it's theologically and theomorally okay to spread the meme of this strip around.  But I thawt there shoud be some value added.  So, I did a semiotic analysis, expressed by the Rookmakerian Nature (bottom / foreground) and Grace (top / background replaced by text of prayers made on the baseball field below the horizon-l+n which is also the talk-buble-l+n, wanting to catch that ball.

Then suddenly his prayers are ansswered like a shower from heaven, and the ball drops out of the upper cloud level (which doubles as the text-inscribed talk-buble), as it were, his prayers are andwered and ssuddenly the rain-clouds/talk-bubble, as it were (you don't really see this moment) showers down the baseball -- only to have the visor of his cap obstruct the ball's fall and tho it drops into Charlie Brown's pocket -- he's a second to late, and it plops out of his mitt and onto the ground, in a dec+dedly unmiraculous way.  Or ... .

Look in the pix above that I've marked with a downward blue arrowhead and the inscribed words "the cap BONK!"  Look at that point, where Schulz himself has inscribed the text BONK! and he's obviously letting us witness how Charlie fell rapt on the thawt of a miracle, and all cute and outwardly humble as thru his own prayer-words the Holy Spirit is converting him to Christ, the reformation of his people, and the coming of his Kingdom on earth as it is in heaven.

Josh Hamilton, American League's Texas Rangers 

Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton was named the American League Most Valuable Player on Tuesday, reaching a peak after years of being derailed by drugs and alcohol.

"I would say a 99 percent chance that this would never happen," said Hamilton, who became the franchise's fifth MVP. "I mean, honestly, I think a lot of people would agree with that."

Music: CountryUSA: Frankie Ballard enters stage guitaring and singing ...

Leading webs+t in the country-music genre and its field of listeners with big ears swarming toward the nearest truest sound,  Great American Country is the place to watch.  I recently happened upon this brief on GAC, "Frankie Ballard Biography" (I just found it today and don't see any documentation or even mention of Ballard's actual age.) I think they're trying to keep floating the urban legend that this guy is still 18, but more l+lk 28, I'd say.

Hailing from Battle Creek, MI, Frankie Ballard may be a newcomer to Nashville, but his edgy country rock sounds like the work of someone deeply at home in Music City. His heartfelt first single, "Tell Me You Get Lonely," is a power mid-tempo song, but a slow down for this singer and powerful guitar slinger. Currently at work on his upcoming debut album for Reprise Records with producer Michael Knox (Jason Aldean), Frankie keeps things rolling on songs like "Get On Down the Road" and "While The Sun Sleeps," which is brim with a brash, youthful vigor and potent high energy.

The fleet-fingered Frankie got his start singing Elvis songs with his dad at the age of five and jokes that he shot his first music video in the family basement when he was seven. Obsessed with baseball and intent on becoming a professional athlete, Frankie didn’t learn to play guitar until he was 18, but once he did, it was full-steam ahead as he locked himself in his room for hours a day to master the instrument. He began playing in blues bands, juggling weeknight gigs with his weekend college baseball commitments. Eventually, music won out, and in the summer of 2008, Frankie won Kenny Chesney’s "Next Big Star" regional competition in Michigan.

He opened for Chesney at the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids and at Ford Field in Detroit, which led to a publishing deal with Sony ATV, Morris Artists Management (Alabama, Kenny Chesney) representation, and a recording contract with Reprise Records. Frankie moved to Nashville in April 2009 and began recording songs penned by such hit makers as Dallas Davidson (Trace Adkins, Brooks & Dunn) and David Lee Murphy (Jason Aldean) on his debut album. Listen for his first single, "Tell Me You Get Lonely," off his forthcoming Reprise Records debut album, which has already landed inside the Top 40 on the country charts.

When Katrina Browne was 28 years old and in seminary, she learned that her ancestors were the largest slave-trading family in U.S. history. And, they were not from the South; they had lived in Rhode Island. Katrina wrote to 200 family members, inviting them to explore their family's past. The result: an award-winning documentary, Traces of the Trade, made with co-producer Juanita Brown, who helped plan a journey to Africa for the group and facilitate painful conversations about their discoveries. I'm not keen on the idea of reparations.  I'm white (w+t).  I feel no guilt whatsoever for slavery or special responsibliity shoud someone bother to accuse me of being a descendent of slave-traders or slave-owners. I'm not.  My ancestors were driven out of Lithuania at the turn from the 19th to the 20th centuries, driven out by economic conditions and Czarism.  Racism was not believed in, nor tawt in my family.  Perhaps with an exaggerated Marxist totality-analysis, one coud argue with me that I and m+ family were "complicit" in slavery, or Jim Crow, or the Lord knows what.  Of course, no sooner brawt up than the obvious requ+rment is to determine the precise degree of complicity.  I notice that some thinkers among American Jews now talk about "degrees of anti-Semitism."

But the guilty and the descendents of slaves in America shoud not construct the realities so that this becomes / is made a black versus w+t issue.  Some American blacks are not the descendents of slaves, at least not of slaves brawt to America or raised here.  We have a significant population now of Black Americans who are immigrants from Black Africa.  They shoudn't receive any reparations, were there such.  And some of them  perhaps were the descendents of Black slave-traders and Black owners of slavces in Africa's history (I certainly welcome the producers in limiting the discussion to slavery in the MidAtlantic trade triangle and in slavery in the USA, but m+ own interests embrace the African milieu which welcomed slave-traders from Western and Islamic civilizations).  Prez Barack Obama is not the descendent of American slaves, but his w+f apparently and their children are.

L+kw+z, some w+ts in America are not the descendents of slave-traders or slave-owners and were not "complicit" in any immiseration of Black people, here or abroad, except in the most trivial totalistic sense.  Except:  if you are using racist categories to begin with (w+t = slaver; black = innocent), or use Marxist-originated ideas of totality-systems of society, a grandiose metanarrative that turns out to be trivializing by including all sorts of w+t people, wrongly, among the "complicit." For instance.

It's a hard topic.  I deeply appreciate the Calvin College video interview, and will probably benefit much by and appreciate deeply the original work whose producers are the interviewees.  The documentary movie itself were shown at the Sundance Film Festival to great acclaim.

Carolina Hurricanes?  All I can get, yet that's a great get, is the Philadelphia Flyers at Canadiens home-base rink.  The Flyers demolished the 'Canes Thursday (8-0)

Whatever.  I'm interested becawz of the sports info below, comparing the USA's National Football League's attempted entry into English sports market by playing a major exhibition game there on Nov3,2k10.  Noah Davis reports on the Brit soccer vs USA football competition that's perhaps in the offing.

Why the NFL Struggles to Gain a Foothold in Europe

On Sunday, the San Francisco Giants and the Denver Broncos played a brutally game  football game at Wembley Stadium in London, England. The game was the fourth installment of “NFL goes to Europe,” a plan to increase the sport’s popularity across the pond.

Success? Hardly.

We turn to Sean O’Conor from No Short Corners. And go:

In that sense I resemble someone handed tickets to a game at USA ’94 who enjoyed the day out but drove home scratching his head at the offside rule and relative lack of scoring. I spent many a Friday night a decade ago driving to watch high-school football in invisible towns in rural Kansas, and before that accompanying football-mad friends to watch nascent gridiron teams clash in the incongruous setting of Sunday summer afternoons in England, but it never stuck beyond the spectacle and sense of occasion. It can be hard to fall in love with a sport you have not played.

If soccer and football were racing to conquer America and Europe, respectively, you’d have to give the edge to the former sport. Major League Soccer saw attendance jump four percent in the recently completed 2010 seasons and college soccer is seeing unprecedented interest, while the NFL can’t get more than a game abroad. Both sports will eventually crossover, but don’t expect either to happen anytime soon.

I wasn't prepared for this development, the trend reporter Davis sees and regarding which he cautions us not to make fantastical presumptions -- yet even he seems to regard the mutual crossover of the games of soccer (British football) and American football, well, inevitable.  But gradual, l+k evolution; nothing revolutionary.

Okay, I'm persuaded.  In the meantime, the h+ly dangerous and often brutal sport of American football (as Sean O'Conor mentions in passing ... it is indeed too brutal, yet it)  catches m+ eye on the telly oftentimes when I coud choose a soccer meet in Canada, USA, England, or a bunch of other countries (mostly European).  The media infrastructure is available  for both sports (but the pro and college football games are carried simultaneously on several channels and all day long, one after the otherm on most sports channels), wh+l the soccer coverage ranges beyond the North American franchises, with much focus  on English teams and more generally European.  But not much on games in Latin America, Africa, or Asia (we do get Asian cricket on the telly here).  Watching TV football is almost a mandatory ritual on Sunday afternoons.  Many Christians tends to have the schedule:  Church, Lunch, Football, on Sundays.

Architecture: Urban Plan: Hong Kong goes for bust in rebuild for West Kowloon

Architectural Record via AGC's email newsletter for the construction industry (Nov2,2k10) reports on a massive urban redevel- opment planned for Hong Kong.  It's expected that the West Kowloon Cultural District will take more than 5 years to build, starting in 2k15:

With the recent unveiling of three competing master plans for the colossal West Kowloon Cultural District (WKCD), Hong Kong finds itself at a watershed moment—one that will not only shape a prominent waterfront site, but also help define the city’s place in the ever-changing firmament of global cultural destinations.

The $2.8-billion publicly funded project will be Asia’s largest cultural complex and is part of Hong Kong’s drive to become “Asia’s World City.” Its scale and ambition—40 hectares of prime real estate (including 23 hectares of open space, 264,200 square meters of cultural facilities, and 422,800 square meters of commercial property)—are daunting. Construction is slated to begin in 2015 and continue in phases until 2020 or later.

Sitting on reclaimed waterfront land left vacant for more than 13 years, WKCD has a checkered history of grand hopes and disappointments. In 2004, Foster + Partners won a developer-led bid competition with a scheme that placed a gigantic glass canopy over the site. But the project was abandoned after loud criticism of the competition process and the architectural design. Eventually, the government set up an independent WKCD Authority, which relaunched the project in 2008 and commissioned three master-plan consultant teams—guided by Foster + Partners, Rem Koolhaas/OMA, and Rocco Design Architects—to compete for the job. Their schemes were unveiled in August, and the winner is expected to be announced in early 2011.

The scale of the development, altho vast, will not displace the larger urban organism that the whole of Hong Kong constitutes, with its diversity of universities, businesses, and churches. And a municipal government accountable to the Communist Party of the People's Republic of China.

Sports: Junior Hockey: System exposed by brave med scientists and reporters

Canadian Press, the service to newspapers print and online, also has an online edition of its own. Today CP is running an article by Sheryl Ubelacker "Concussion rate in junior hockey 7 times higher than previously reported: study" (Nov1,2k10). Via Winnipeg Free Press online. Here's Ubelacker's analysis:

TORONTO - The proportion of junior hockey players who suffer concussion is far more significant than previously thought, says a groundbreaking study that has researchers calling for changes to how Canada's national game is played at all levels.

"The results of this study demonstrate an incidence of concussion significantly higher than any other study in the literature — seven times higher," lead investigator Dr. Paul Echlin told a news conference Monday.

Echlin, a sports medicine specialist in London, Ont., said the study recorded the number of concussions sustained by members of two unnamed junior hockey teams during the 2009-2010 regular season.

Seventeen players suffered a total of 21 concussions during 52 physician-observed games — with almost one-quarter of those occurring among players involved in on-ice fights, say the researchers, whose study is published in the November issue of the journal Neurological Focus.

Echlin said that during the season, 29 per cent of players who had a concussion went on to suffer a second or recurrent concussions — brain injuries that have the potential to result in lifelong physical and cognitive deficits.

Tech: Security Online: My Space webs+t sends your personal Identity Data when ads are clickd

I got the dope on MySpace from Wall Street Journal reporters Geoffrey Fowler and Emily Steel who did an investigation to find out what the hell is goin' on (WSJ, Oct23,2k10) "S+t sends personal IDs when ads are clicked" :

MySpace and some popular applications on the social-networking s+t have been transmitting data to outside advertising companies that could be used to identify users, a Wall Street Journal investigation has found.

The market for data about Web users is hot--and one of the methods used is "scraping," harvesting online conversations. In May, Nielsen scraped private forums where patients discuss illnesses. How can web users prevent their data from being scraped? Julia Angwin joins Digits to discuss.

The information was primarily sent by MySpace when users clicked on ads. The website had pledged to discontinue the practice of sending personal data when users click on ads after the Journal reported it in May.

A MySpace spokesman said the data identify the user profile being viewed but not necessarily the person who clicked on the ad.
