Arts and Faith: Trend: Songs, danceable, for the Festival of Lights (Hanukka)

Young hip Jews leading

a Hanukkah music makeover

Washington, DC — Put on your boogie shoes —the new Hanukkah songs are here!

What last year seemed like a happy coincidence has become a hip new Hanukkah tradition: groups of harmonizing young Jews releasing seriously Jewish, yet seriously danceable, songs for the Festival of Lights, which begins at sundown on 20 December.  The Maccabeats, who scored more than six million hits on YouTube last year with a song about flipping potato latkes (pancakes), a traditional Hanukkah food, are back this year with a boppy reggae tune, Religion News Service reports. "Miracle" explores the spiritual meaning of Hanukkah, which commemorates the successful revolt led by Judah Maccabee against an ancient king who tried to quash Judaism.

Sometimes using clay, it was called Claymation, but the medium coud as well

Music: Orthodox Jewish song: Matisyahu Miller, the guy with the beard no longer has one

Matisyahu [Miller] shaves his beard, and cantor-watchers speculate on its symbolic important.  Has he left Hasidism?  and with it, left his role as "Hasidic reggae superstar'?

Sorry folks, all you get is me…no alias. When I started becoming religious 10 years ago it was a very natural and organic process. It was my choice. My journey to discover my roots and explore Jewish spirituality—not through books but through real life. At a certain point I felt the need to submit to a higher level of religiosity…to move away from my intuition and to accept an ultimate truth. I felt that in order to become a good person I needed rules—lots of them—or else I would somehow fall apart. I am reclaiming myself. Trusting my goodness and my divine mission.  — From the performer's website.

"The always-irreverent Heeb Magazine claims this leap of face means that the musician has gone completely secular:"  And: "We take Miller’s words to mean that he’s done with Orthodoxy and is going to trust his own inner-spirituality.  He is also no longer calling himself Matisyahu and intends to rebirth himself as a secular, albeit spiritual, musician. "  Probably not so, it turns out.  He simply shaved his beard and continued his daily Orthodox observances.

Last year, Huff Po explained the context of Matisyahu's overture:

Hasidic Reggae Hanukkah Tour Opens

Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, which begins in the evening on Dec. 1, is all about exposing what is hidden, uncovering mysteries and embracing unbelievable miracles. Matisyahu, the hometown Hasidic hero of New York City and a cultural icon for Jewish America, crafted his own light-filled musical mystery at the Brooklyn Bowl on Nov. 29, opening his nine-night Festival of Light tour with a nearly non-stop, two-hour set that covered the span of his career while peeking into the unknown future.
This show was the first spark, the shamash of Matisyahu's touring menorah. Let me explain: There are eight days of Hanukkah, which celebrates the miracle of one day's worth of oil lasting for eight days as the successful revolutionaries of the Maccabee family rededicated the once-desecrated Holy Temple. Modern Jews celebrate the holiday by lighting a nine-branched candelabra, called a menorah, the number of flames increasing with the number of days.
So why does the menorah have nine branches instead of eight? There's a special commandment that one may not use the lights of the menorah for any practical purpose other than proclaiming the miracle of the holiday. An additional flame, the shamash, is needed to symbolically help the other flames be revealed in the world. Hence, eight days, nine flames. So too, if each show in Matisyahu's Festival of Light is it's own unique flame, then the shamash, this opening show, was a helping of pure holiday fire.
Other parallels abound. Born Mathew Miller, Matisyahu took on his Hebrew name after becoming religious in 2001, and it is that moniker that has become a household code name for observant Judaism in the face of cultural and spiritual Jewish assimilation. In that context, there's nothing new about a Matisyahu today because there lived, more than 2,000 years ago, another Matisyahu, also a symbol for strengthening Jewish roots in a spiritual desert. He, of course, was the father of the Maccabean revolt that reclaimed the Second Temple in Jerusalem from unholy Hellenist hands and therefore created a new Jewish festival.  — Josh Fleet (November 30, 2k10)
Hanukkah begins a week from today at sunset on TuesdayDecember 20, 2011, and ends at sunset on WednesdayDecember 28, 2011.

The year's 10 worst social media meltdowns
A number of brands and celebrities found out this year that all it takes is one slip-up to quickly turn their social media fans into foes. Among this year's biggest blunders: then-U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner's ill-advised tweets, Gilbert Gottfried's post-tsunami jokes and Kenneth Cole's overreach on tying its products to the "Arab Spring" uprisings. Other big mistakes include a Chrysler ad agency's tweet cursing Detroit's bad drivers, Netflix's failure to secure the Twitter handle for its short-lived Qwikster brand and Ragu's tone-deaf attempt at reaching out to "dad bloggers." Advertising Age (tiered subscription model) (12/12) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

A lot of rock bands visit the NPR studios with maybe a fiddle or two in tow. But Miracles of Modern Science are not a typical rock band. The group boasts a mandolin, upright bass, cello, violin, drums — and absolutely no electric guitar.
Evan Younger, Josh Hirshfeld, Kieran Ledwidge, Tyler Pines and Geoff McDonald met in college, where they bonded over a shared love of jazz, rock and classical music. But even more important to their chemistry, McDonald says, is a belief that those genres can play nice together, with satisfying results.
"There's sort of a thaw in the music community now between people who play classical music, or whatever you want to call it — concert music, art music — and what we do in music clubs," says McDonald. "And that's a really great thing. You see lots of people doing imaginative things from both sides of what was [once] a divide."
Miracles of Modern Science piled into NPR's Studio 4A to speak with Weekend Edition Sundayhost Audie Cornish, and to perform songs from their debut album, Dog Year.

......   On Sunday night [Dec11], the fashion collective Three as Four opened its highly anticipated exhibition “Insalaam Inshalom” at the Beit Ha’Ir Center for Urban Culture in Tel Aviv, bringing to fruition a project over two years in the making. Covering the walls of the four-story building in fabric printed with their spring collection’s central motifs, which are made of a mix of Muslim and Jewish symbols, the designers Gabi Asfour, Adi Gil and Ange Donhauser invited 10 artists to show works that relate to the project’s central notion: that Judaism and Islam can live side by side. “We’ve accumulated the energy of artists and performers who are like-minded,” Asfour said. “We tried to balance things from all sides, though it’s always difficult.”

    Ryan Braun Tests Positive

    For Performance-Enhancing Drugs

    Pix: Getty

Milwaukee Brewers slugger Ryan Braun tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug and faces a 50-game suspension at the beginning of the 2012 season, according to ESPN's "Outside The Lines."

Per the report, Braun was notified of the positive test about a month before he was named the National League's most valuable player.

The 28-year-old is disputing the test and has claimed that he has never knowingly taken any banned substances. A representative for Braun released a statement on Saturday:

There are highly unusual circumstances surrounding this case which will support Ryan's complete innocence and demonstrate there was absolutely no intentional violation of the program. While Ryan has impeccable character and no previous history, unfortunately, because of the process we have to maintain confidentiality and are not able to discuss it any further, but we are confident he will ultimately be exonerated

Based on the ESPN report, it would seem the "unusual circumstances" that Braun's statement refer to relate to a second test shortly after he was informed of the initial failure. As Jeff Sullivan ofSBNation points out, though, the key is the time lapse between the pair of tests.

According to the ESPN report, Braun's failure of the PED test was triggered by an elevated level of testosterone. In 2009, Manny Ramirez failed a urine test due to an elevated testosterone level.

Jon Heyman of MLB Network tweeted that Major League Baseball has no announcement on the matter planned.
