Technics: 500 List: Tech companies organized and sortable by name, industry, numerical rank

With a little research you may find on this list, a number of factoid gems for your own reflection, ethical investing, and structural ins+t into industries and companies, as well as the American tech economy overall. The 500 list, however, is not the usual economically-indexed one.  Rather, it is a tech-usage ranking that  supplies data on revenue totals, h+est ranking IT executive of each company listed, title of the chief information officer, and industry.  In clicking the charted list to Industry mode, you get a profile of the several industries and industrial sectors represented.

This service is furnished by Information Week's Tech Business webs+t.  I get the email newsletter of this s+t, as well those for Govt Tech (a major market for the Tech Biz players), and the Grok on Google newsletter.

Eastwood tackles death in 'Hereafter'

Here's my pick from the avalanche of publicity cranked out by the Toronto International Film Festival, read "international" as "American."



 Clint Eastwood, the man with a zero bull---t level, has returned to the Toronto International Film Festival for the first time in 20 years.
Not since he brought White Hunter, Black Heart to our town in 1990 has the legendary filmmaker been part of the festival, but he was in Toronto yesterday to introduce his latest movie, Hereafter, a drama about the human struggle to understand death and its aftermath. The movie, which stars Matt Damon, Bryce Dallas Howard and Cecile De France, was a gala presentation Sunday night.
Hereafter concerns three disparate people — a woman who has a near-death experience, a child who cannot get over the death of a loved one and a man with a special connection to the afterlife. Their stories are slowly woven together.
Eastwood — stopping to spontaneously play the piano for a moment at a downtown hotel — brought Matt Damon with him to this interview.
Damon talked about the experience of working on Hereafter with Eastwood, with whom he also worked on Invictus. “He is an actor, so he knows a lot about it, and he gives the kind of direction he’d want as an actor,” said Damon. Searching for the right words, he continued, “He’s been acting longer than, longer than —”
“Don’t say God,” growled Eastwood, cheerfully.
“I was going to say, longer than most of the actors he’s working with. So he knows what’s helpful and what isn’t,” responded Damon, laughing.

Soccer / football: Amazing goal: You have to see this one! [corrected]



I've seen some long kicks in my day, some very long kicks of the soccer ball by goalkeepers; but I've never seen a goalie kick that ball to the far other end of the field to the opposite goal posts ... and score!  Wow!

I have to dig up  info on the goalie's name, his time, the date of the game and its location and the opposing team's name.  It's in my Safari Cache app, somewhere. [Later: I searched and searched and coudn't find what I thawt I had, and lo and behold, I got the my vids mixed up and can't find what  I thawt I had, or did I just dream that one?] I want[ed] to get Technowlb to wr+t up the Safari Cache Explorer app, and I retrieve more info on this fabulous [imaginary?] game, and the team and world's star goalie.  That's the way the media game works, a kick like that on viraling video imagery and you go from an interesting player on an interesting team to a target of cameras and publicity and celebrity worldwide.  A person becomes the empty core of a vast whirlwind, as in the case of Cristiano Robino (more another day or so).


So, enjoy the soccer vid posted.

(In any case, I'm truly grateful too that YouTube (here's the vid's URL) exists and I have the equipment to view these soccer video gems occasionally!)

Sports: Football: First Lady, Michelle Obama, throws a pass to anonymous receiver


Our one and only First Lady throws a pass to the receiver, and some redoubtable photographer had a camera ready to catch the ball mid-air.

Yeow!, she knows how to throw a football, and she's still of an age to be able to get it aloft!  I've never known of a First Lady so able and active.

Tech: PC app: Apimac's iDatabase holds promise of h+ performance



This is a 3rd-party application for Macs (recent versions of the operating system).  You can cross file stuff, establishing your own search and sort categories and using a good set of templates (because categories will be different for different kinds of data, as you determine them).  You can also make your own templates, apparently.  I'm checking this one out!

SportsUSA: Football: Boise State U dogs heels of #1 Albama, #2 Ohio State U

The meteoric rise of Boise State's Broncos to popular acclaim is a new phenom that so far hasn't  registered in a major change to the rankings on AP's Top 25 list.
"The Broncos remained third after a thrilling 33-30 victory against Virginia Tech on Monday night, receiving eight first-place votes and 1,399 points from the media panel, 13 points behind Ohio's Buckeyes.


"Ohio State received four first-place votes and 1,412 points.
"[University of] Alabama [Crimson Tide] had 47 first-place votes, down seven from the preseason poll, and 1,484 points in the rankings released Tuesday.
"[Texas Christian University -- Horned Frogs, can you believe that name? -- here's the Frogs schedule] : "TCU from the Mountain West Conference moved up two spots to No. 4, marking the first time since the Bowl Championship Series was implemented in 1998 that two teams from conferences without automatic BCS bids have been in the top five. Boise State is the defending Western Athletic Conference champion.
"[University of] Texas remained No. 5 and received one first-place vote."
The game to which I'm especially looking forward is the Frogs against Southern Methodist University -- Friday, Sept 24.

Fashion: Fall: Certified looks for fashionable women, and men too


Brooks Brothers advertizes this lovely model in a silk tunic, an engaging printed design for the new season but not a tunic that emphasizes warmth shoud the Autumn months ahead turn cold.  Since the price was handy, I included it.  As you can see, the handy price is pricey!

















For men, here's a look for Fall 2k10.  I found it marketted under the headline "5 Must-Have Menswear Items for School" in Daily Fashion & Style.  Sorry, no price tage available this time.

Sports: Baseball: Philllies' Hamel "hurls 7 shutout frames against Brewers

Major League Baseball (USA):

Philadelphia's Phillies slawtered the Brewers, out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. "Cole Hamels carried a no-hitter into the fifth and earned his ninth win by yielding three hits in seven scoreless innings. The lone RBI [runs batted in] came from Carlos Ruiz, while Brewers starter Chris Capuano took the loss."


For the h+l+ts, click up the video "Hamel's gem." (not otherwise available, apparently).  Hamel is shown delivering a barrage of pitches to Brewers batters, striking them out, the last scenario being a double play that finished any Brewer initiative to recoup the game.   The win "moved the Phillies within one game of first place in the National League East ...."


Who knows, this may be the year for the Phillies to take the Eastern Conference of the League, and then the  National League championship, and on to the World Series.
