Sports: Cricket: World Cup won by India, Sri Lankans not

BBC News (Apr 2,2k11)

World Cup cricket:

Joy in India

and Sri Lankan despair

Millions have poured onto the streets of India after their cricketers beat Sri Lanka in the final of the World Cup to become the first Asian nation to win the trophy twice. BBC correspondents in India and Sri Lanka describe scenes of rejoicing and dejection.  The venue was Mumbai, India's "expensively-refurbished Wankhede Stadium" (Cricket News).

History-defying India

lift cricket World Cup

Gautam Gambhir made 97, and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni smashed an

unbeaten 91 off 79 balls as India won the World Cup for the first time since 1983 with a six-wicket victory over Sri Lanka on Saturday.

Sri Lanka, who won the toss and elected to bat in the day-night final, rode on Mahela Jayawardene's 103 'not out' off 88 balls, to pile up 274-6 in their 50 overs.
India, cheered by a sell-out crowd of 33,000 at the Wankhede stadium, surpassed the challenging target with 10 balls to spare as Dhoni pounded Nuwan Kulasekara for the winning six.

Toronto the Good: Satire: Publisher responds to verbal dogfite in Toronto btwn bike suppliers and repair shops

blogTO (found Apr 3,2k11)

Social satire comes of age in Toronto, Ontario (TO) around the battle of the bike shops, engaging an alleged for-profit against an alleged charity.  I took the other view in my comment elsewhere online at Reddit (an alleged cyber-smear site):

Excellent satire!  But also terribly banal.  I don't quite believe now that either of the two entities who are principals in this cosmic tragedy actually exist outside cyberspace in the otherwise real world.  Yet, we are Aristotelians all, and the really real (Francis Schaeffer) casts a long shadow on our sense of existence and true truth (ibidem).
The whole non-event has left me dishevelled among the attacks and disclaimers and apologies by the accusers.  It turns out that everyone involved is actually a goody-goody (except one feller, apparently, but even that is too full of dubiosity to account for the sound and fury .... spelling check -- Shoud that be "furry"?  Sound and furry, the new phrase triggers our re-interpretation of 'sound' so that now there is no decibelic sound nor emotive fury, only sound and furry, conjuring up a furry who is sound in body and mind, perhaps.  Sasquatch, undoubtedly.

Comix and Cartoons: Brazilian Portugese: Superman, Wonder Woman, and others -- in dialogue

Hat Tip to Igor Miguel and Alberto Dell'Isola Medeiros

Superman, WonderWoman, Batman, is the other superhero Robin? or who? -- and then there's that little guy who comes into the room and grabs a sandwich from the fridge.  Shoud I know him?  Is he a Brazilian cartoon character?  Tune in next time, to find out ....

Newspeak

For this New Sounds edition, listen to some "alt-classical" or "indie classical" bands, like Newspeak or the Paul Bailey Ensemble.  Newspeak is an eight-piece amplified ensemble working under the direction of composer David T. Little and clarinetist Eileen Mack. Named after the thought-limiting language in George Orwell’s 1984, Newspeak explores the grey area where art and politics mix.  We'll hear the group, from their "Sweet Light Crude" release, playing a work by Missy Mazzoli - "In spite of all this."
Plus, listen to some electroacoustic chamber rock from Nicole Lizee (Besnard Lakes), a Canadian composer who manages to weave in jazz, improvisation, pop music, contemporary music and everything in between.  Music by the Paul Bailey Ensemble rounds out the show.
PROGRAM #3174   “alt-classical” and “indie classical”   (First aired on 2-23-11)
