Kellie Pickler is the special guest on this week’s Top 20 Country Countdown. She stopped by to chat with Suzanne Alexander about her new album, 100 Proof, which hit stores January 24, while Nan Kelley counts down the week’s Top 20 videos. If you missed the Friday night premiere, check the schedule for re-airs throughout the weekend.

On the chart this week, the Top 4 remain unchanged, with Scotty McCreery keeping his stronghold on the top spot. Luke Bryan trades places with Chris Young to round out the Top 5. Kenny Chesney’s latest video, “Reality,” debuts on the countdown this week, coming in at No. 20.

Music: Cumbia: Colombian-originated genre is absorping today's h+ tech support of its typifying instrumentalziations, and more

This list of songs centers on the ethnomusical tradition of Cumbia from Columbia, South America. 'Cumbia' is a musical tradition that is very much still in development, and it is internationalizing. Always at work absorbing various ethnic musics that were commingling indigenously in Columbia, and then further afield in the Carribean and Lartin America, and now in the English-speaking cultural zones with h+ tech support, it also presented the commingling of languages used where its rhythms, tonalities, and typifying instrumentalizations were h+ly valued. I first heard the word "Cumbia" in Harry Belafonte's song that uses the words "Cumbia, my Lord, cumbia," which I had always taken to mean simply "Come by here, my Lord, come by here," especially given its prayer-like quality in that song. My instinct was to reach for it on YouTube, but all entries for it had been taken from the Tube's public offering and labelled "Privatized." If and when notable commentary appears over the next few days, I'll point you to it here.

Updates: "So now is a good time to ask, 'Why nine, as opposed to five or 10?'" notes the Boston Globe's Wesley Morris, referring, of course, to the number of films nominated for Best Picture. "Last summer, the Academy's board of governors introduced a new nominating system, which uses a version of preferential voting that eliminates from consideration any film that failed to appear as the number-one choice on at least 10 percent of members' ballots. There are just around 5,000 voting members of the Academy, which means that at least nearly 500 voters would have had to put, say, Bridesmaids, in the first slot on their ballot, which didn't happen."

Among those tallying the surprises and snubs are Flavorwire's Jason Bailey, the New Yorker's Richard Brody, New York's David Edelstein, the Atlantic Wire's Richard Lawson, the NYT's Melena Ryzik and the L's Henry Stewart.

And among the snubbed is Albert Brooks, who tweets, "I got ROBBED. I don't mean the Oscars, I mean literally. My pants and shoes have been stolen. And to the Academy: 'You don't like me. You really don't like me.'" And Movieline's ST VanAirsdale points out that Patton Oswalt is being pretty damn amusing on Twitter today as well. What a drab list.Miss Bala and Shame are criminal omissions. Similarly, overlooking Drive in every category except Sound Mixing is also ludicrous. On a positive note, Paradise Lost 3 and Gary Oldman both deserve their nod.

And this is maybe my opinion only but I’m so tired of that and all the preferences to Spielberg (because it seems that is now a RULE that if he makes a new movie, it HAS to be nominated) really, this all seems so silly. I can’t believe that Fassbender is not nominated, it just seems all so wrong.

George Goody about 9 hours ago : Tom Smith, I completely agree with your opinion of Brad Pitt’s performance in Tree of Life. It was such a complex character. A beleaguered man who represses his vulnerability, displacing his anger onto his family, expressing his love for his sons – tragically – through persistent abuses aimed, misguidedly, but somehow sympathetically, to fortify them for a cruel and unforgiving world. Another forum writer said he thought Brad Pitt’s spoken lines have always come off as inauthentic with an air of being too “well learned.” Other films notwithstanding, I disagree in the case of the Tree of Life. His character’s gruff, stilted voice seems unnatural only because it represents a painstaking artifice, aimed at asserting his dominion and overcoming his sense of doubt and vulnerability. As such, it’s these very brusque masculine gestures that allow him to evince his sensitivity as a human being.His performance in Moneyball was good, but so much of the pathos we feel for that character comes not from his performance but from the parallel backstory depicting his misfortune as a player.I also bemoan Fassbender’s exclusion and, as much as I love Gary Oldman, wonder why he’s being considered there for Tinker, Tailor. There really wasn’t that much complexity to it, although to be sure, he did very sympathetically display a respectable and good man made to weather the misfortune of a broken heart and betrayal.In general, didn’t everyone find the movies this year, in general, to be pretty deficient. People are saying that the Academy is to blame. I agree, but I also think there just weren’t that many gems out there compared to other years. A sad state of affairs I say.And lastly, how is a movie like War Horse!! Fucking War Horse!! being made anymore. Fucking Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks and their completely out of touch understanding of war. I’m reading a book on the psychology of Trauma and Recovery among Vets. In it, this line was particularly resonant in light of War Horse: “A Vietnam veteran addresses this universal tendency to deny the horror of war: ’If at the end of a war story you feel uplifted, or if you feel that some small bit of rectitude has been salvaged from the larger waste, then you have been made the victim of a very old and terrible lie.” – Trauma and Recovery Judith Herman.

cheryl clark about 9 hours ago: It’s interesting that the men’s roles were weaker than the women’s. Plus, two women nominated for playing a man! What’s that about? Just that it seems hard to do, I guess. I wouldn’t see the movie.And what’s with the sniping about Woody being nominated? This IS one of his best—he really evokes what people think Paris is and was. And even the non-English majors must get a kick out of seeing Hemingway and Picasso brought to life in the ’20’s. As an English major who specialized in 1920’s lit., it was a fun fantasy. Worth several viewings.

Too hard to pick winners,but just for the record some educated guesses and more than half I have not seen

Best picture: The Artist or The desecdamts.
Best actor: Clooney.
Best actress: Streep.
Best supporting actor: Plummer or Von sydow.
Best supporting actress: No idea.

I predict the artist from what I have read about it will take out lots of technical awards and maybe design and costume.

I usually don’t watch the oscars too long and boring and would rather read a book,or even a mediocre movie. Some of us have lives to live.Usually happy with edited highlights and reading about in paper the next day. anything else exciting will turn up on,y iPad.

As to my predictions above,would not surprise me if they all wrong.

Millerfilm about 2 hours ago: That is the thing with the Academy. They will make choices in one category that will sound good, maybe even gutsy. Then, they’ll nominate Melissa McCarthy! Honestly? This is why cineastes throw up their hands and give up on Oscar. Plus, as always, it’s the movies that either made a lot of money, or had a well-funded “For Your Consideration” campaign that get in. Personally, I was blown away by “Melancholia” and would have wanted it to be nominated in many categories. Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (honestly, Melissa McCarthy gets a nod and not Kirsten Dunst?), and Cinematography. Especially cinematography! The opening eight-minute sequence, plus two gorgeous shots of horse riders running through the early morning mist, make for some of the most beautiful camerawork I have ever seen. I am glad that “The Tree of Life” got some recognition. I want to see Malick both show up, and win, having to give an acceptance speech! That would make the Oscars worth watching!

How would Tim Tebow's fancy footwork on the gridiron translate to the ballroom? "Dancing with the Stars" performer Karina Smirnoff wants to find out.

Smirnoff celebrated her 34th birthday on Saturday in Las Vegas, and told a reporter from People that all she wanted as a gift is for the Denver Broncos quarterback to join the cast of the reality show.

"All I want for my birthday is for Tim Tebow to dance on 'Dancing with the Stars,'" she said, shortly after Denver's season ended in an AFC Divisional playoff loss to the New England Patriots.

"He can run, jump, pass, throw touchdowns," she stated. "All [that] is missing is to see if he has the dance skills. That would make him an all-around athlete and someone that I would love to dance with on the show."

But the Broncos website says Tebow, an outspoken Christian, is six-foot three-inches and 235 pounds, so is he too big for dancing?

Karen L. Gates, owner of the Fred Astaire Dance Studio in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, doesn't think so. She told The Christian Post on Friday that professional male dancers are often thinner than Tebow is, and his height could also present a problem depending on how short his partner is, but it could be done.

Tebow wouldn't be the first NFL player to hit the DWTS dance floor, either. Former NFL running back Emmitt Smith and Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward have each won the competition. Other NFL players, like Jerry Rice, Jason Taylor and Warren Sapp, have finished in second place on DWTS.

Gates says football players have several advantages when learning how to dance, which include their athleticism and ability to memorize.

"They're used to the mental challenges and memorizing plays," she said, comparing it to memorizing dance steps. She also stated that Tebow has the additional advantage of being "popular" and "good-looking."

Despite the fact that the current NFL season is now over for Tebow, he has continued to make headlines in the days following the Broncos' defeat.

An NFL source told ESPN this week that Tebow played through considerable pain during the second half of Saturday's game, after he was hit in the third quarter. He reportedly tore cartilage on his rib, bruised a lung and had fluid buildup in his pleural cavity.

"I just wanted to show character. You just continue to fight and it doesn't change who you are, how you play, how you go out there, you should be the same at all times," Tebow said about being hurt, according to ESPN.

"That's what I wanted to show, it didn't matter if it was the first play or the last play or you were down by 42. I was going to be the same player and I was still going to give everything I have, because that's all I have to give."

John Elway, executive vice president of football operations for the Broncos, also announced on Monday that Tebow would be the team's starting quarterback going into training camp for next season.

Tebow went 8-5 as the team's starting quarterback in the 2011-2012 season, including the playoffs, after the team went just 1-4 under former Denver QB Kyle Orton. Some have wondered whether or not Tebow would start next season, and Elway's announcement quickly laid to rest any speculation.

"We know what kind of mentality Timmy has," Elway said during a press conference. "He's a great worker, and we know he'll work his tail off this offseason. We're looking forward to this offseason to be able to see him improve in (the mechanics of the passing game). I think he will make those improvements."

Tebow's job is safe for now, but in terms of some offseason fun it is still unclear as to whether or not DWTS fans will get to see him cha-chaing on the dance floor anytime soon.

The season premiere of "Dancing with the Stars" is scheduled for Monday, Mar. 19 at 8 p.m. ET.

After Instagram caught fire, mobile apps with various effects
and filtering techniques flooded the Apple and Android markets.
Some of them are quite innovative and cool – particularly
PhotoForge 2 and Wordfoto. None came close to matching
the Instagram growth juggernaut.

But perhaps the most brazen – and amusing – case of radical
copycatting I have ever seen is the way Pinterest has been
mirrored by an aggressive “parasite” over the past two months.
Pinterest is perhaps the biggest web phenomenon of this winter.
The site hit 11 Million unique users during one December week
alone. Alexa now pegs it as the 32nd most popular website in
the United States. Visitors spend more than 11 minutes on the
site daily, crushing Twitter on this metric by more than 50%.

Pinterest is pure catnip for mature women. Wedding tips, babies

in funny poses, mason jar decoration ideas, cake recipes and

exercise slogans drive the site. The runaway success of

Pinterest probably demonstrates how much most mainstream

websites cater to male visitors.
There had been some kind of

unmet demand for a site
combining hair-braiding advice
with hedgehog babies in rubber
boots. Pinterest filled this
vacuum

highly effectively.

And as the highest

form of flattery,

Pinterest is now

shadowed by one

of the purest parasites ever. Something called

Pinspire copies the look, feel and functionality of Pinterest almost perfectly.

There is even what seems to be a very carefully calibrated
guerrilla marketing campaign – many of the new Pinterest
posts are now followed by a polite, complimentary note:
“Absolutely adorable! Can I pin this on my board at
pin spire .com?” These notes flatter the original pinner,
while directing traffic to Pinspire. They appear to be crafted
to land just on the right side of the line defining raw spam.
The spelling of these notes recently changed from “pinspire”
to “pin spire”, indicating possible evasion from
countermeasures.

And they are driving healthy growth of Pinspire. Alexa now
ranks Pinspire as roughly the number 13’000 site in America,
up from being number 100’000 in early January. This matches
the ranking of established, high-quality niche sites like Silicon
Investor, Gamerankings or Calculated Risk – sites that took
years to build and required vast amounts of content to claw their
way to the middle.

Pinspire rocketed to this level in less than three months – and
requiring little or no original design or content work. Judging
from the latest wave of Pinspire redirect notes on Pinterest
right now, the parasite just might stage another growth burst
in coming months. The youth of Pinterest is probably what
enables the parasitic competition – many consumers are only
now discovering Pinterest and thus do not have much brand
loyalty. It will be interesting to see where this saga is heading
next.

New England Patriots wide receiver is inactive for Sunday's AFC Championship Game against the Baltimore Ravens, one day after he reportedly was in South Florida to attend his father's funeral.

The Boston Herald reported Saturdaythat Ochocinco was seen Friday night in Boston's Logan International Airport and took a flight to Florida. The Boston Globe reported Sunday that Ochocinco had returned from his trip and was at Gillette Stadium.

Ochocinco has had a disappointing first season with the Patriots and was on the field for only one snap in last weekend's 45-10 divisional playoff victory over theDenver Broncos.

Patriots offensive tackle (back) also is inactive Sunday, along with quarterback , running backs and , linebacker and guard . Vollmer was listed as questionable on the team's injury report and hasn't played since Week 12.

Ravens wide receiver , cornerback , running back Anthony Allen, linebackers and , offensive lineman and nose tackle all have been ruled out of the game.

The event was the league's playoff at the Champs Bowl, and it was the last game of the season. Back to the books and final exams, for graduating seniors at both schools.

Ron Kuipers: Detroit doesn't rush young players like the Oilers [NHL Edmonton, Alberta, Canada] do, so I'm not as worried as you are about creating roster spots for developing talent. One of the only bright spots this year is that the Oilers seem to have finally established a decent player development system in OKC. Wherever you place the age cluster, the team will need veterans. If you re-sign [Ales] Hemsky for a decent rate, you get a better player, one who can play now, then you will in any trade. The ship may have sailed on Hemsky, and maybe he needs to be somewhere else to get his mojo back. But the list of players who took a long time to recover from shoulder surgery but went on to have productive seasons is significant. Things we can't know, like 'Is he a good mentor?' would be highly relevant to this decision.

Ron: Michael, re-reading your post I realize you are suggesting getting an asset but then re-signing Hemsky in July. If that could happen, of course its better. Keep Hemsky plus get some stuff. The problem is that I have never seen this happen. Once the player is gone they are usually gone. People said the same thing about Smytty when he left. If he didn't come back that July, wat makes us think Hemsky would?

Michael: I can only go by what I see on the few Saturday nights that I get to watch the Oilers play. Maybe he's playing hurt (like whitney and others), but he is not his dynamic self who could at least create opportunities even when they don't get completed. But maybe that's a reason not to trade him, we wouldn't get much for him right now anyway.

Ron: I for one don't question Hemsky's commitment to the team, and think all the negative talk lately has been planted by management into the everyready major sports media mouthpieces (Matheson, I'm looking at you), because they wanted to move him long ago and just want the fans to be onside when they inevitably get fleeced. But hey they might get a draft pick who might become a decent player who they can then trade again for future considerations and we can spend every spring wondering how high our draft pick is gonna be.

Michael: Ah, but that's just it, Ron. As far as I can see, Hemmer isn't playing much of a mentor role, he's not only fighting this year, he's dogging it. I'd be happy to be wrong about this of course and defer to the infallible wisdom of Oilers management who have never made any foolish trades or overpaid any underperformers. I suppose it all depends on Hemsky's price. They'll need cap space in a few years to resign the young guys when they're RFAs and hopefully to pull in a top pair defenceman.

Ron: Completely agree about his play. My original point is that his value is at an all time low, so seeing as you won't get much, keep him and then there is at least an even chance for a comeback season a la Marian Hossa. That would still be useful to a young, rebuilding team. Oilers need to sell high. Like, they might be able to move Khabibulin's contract now. ... But they're going to move in, there is not doubt in my mind. I just think it is a mistake.

Michael: I too would be happier to move Khabibulin than Hemsky, though I'm not yet totally convinced that Dubnyk is ready to be no. 1 yet. Except that, leaving out the hot start, he's been as good or better than Bulin. Fixing goalie problems is even harder and longer than fixing defense problems.

ZDNet’s Friending Facebook blog reported that Hannibal posted 20,000 logins Sunday, 30,000 Monday, 10,000 Tuesday, and 25,000 Wednesday, all to Pastebin, a site that allows users to upload text.

Facebook has reacted to the breach, and some users have already changed their passwords, while the social network is prompting those who haven’t to do so, and other accounts have been locked down.

Hannibal also taunted government officials and threatened to reveal information on the bank accounts of “helpless Arabs” in the headers of his posts to Pastebin.

This Christmas, friends and family (disguised as musicians, producers and designers) helped my 12 year old friend, Emmanuelle, birth blind, to share her song with a few more people than come to pot luck and backyard concerts. It took 10 days, a lot of delicious energy and too many smiles to mention. We hope you love it as much as we do. Merry Christmas

11-Year-Old Blind Singer Creates Christmas Song for Charity, Christian News

An 11-year-old girl is helping to spread Christmas cheer this holiday season with her inspirational Christmas songs despite her own hardships – blindness.

"Night of Our Lives" was penned by Emmanuelle Lo, and uploaded to YouTube where thousands of people, including rock stars watched the video and gave praise.

Linda Chorney, a 2010 Grammy nominee, wrote, "Wow, what a sweet, pure voice, a real gem," while Bobby Whitlock of Delaney & Bonnie, Derek & The Dominoes said, "She sees the true world."

The young girl lives with her parents and five siblings small, one bedroom home in Michigan where she developed a love for music at an early age when she would pretend to read music.

Lo's family did not have enough money to get her music lessons so a neighbor hosted a backyard concert to help them raise money so she could begin to take lessons.

The money raised by the 80 or so people was enough to get Lo a guitar and a few weeks of training.

A few weeks later, and much to the surprise of her family, she debuted her song, "Nights of Our Lives" at a friend's house and in front of Doug B. Nelson, a record producer who worked on the Grammy nominated album Pinetop Perkins & Friends.

Upon seeing her performance, Nelson asked Lo to record the song with him.

The 11-year-old plans to donate a portion of her song's proceeds despite her family's struggles to iTunes' "Opportunity Music Project - OMP," which is a non-profit organization based in New York and provides music lessons for disadvantaged children.

"So many people have helped me, I want to help people like I've been helped."

What last year seemed like a happy coincidence has become a hip new Hanukkah tradition: groups of harmonizing young Jews releasing seriously Jewish, yet seriously danceable, songs for the Festival of Lights, which begins at sundown on 20 December. After the long lag of the lockout and labour negotiations, I had troubled rezoning my brain for B-ball lust. But she's back, she's back, they tell me. But where, where. Well and ESPN tweest is only so long, so I have to set forth to find a game and one that's broadcast in Toronto and the time, and of course the teams as any fan can tell you, a team shoud glam you enuff that ou'll prioritize it for your viewing. So I have to do some research. Can ESPN help me. Dunno.

"The always-irreverent Heeb Magazine claims this leap of face means that the musician has gone completely secular:" And: "We take Miller’s words to mean that he’s done with Orthodoxy and is going to trust his own inner-spirituality. He is also no longer calling himself Matisyahu and intends to rebirth himself as a secular, albeit spiritual, musician. " Probably not so, it turns out. He simply shaved his beard and continued his daily Orthodox observances.

Hasidic Reggae Hanukkah Tour Opens

Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, which begins in the evening on Dec. 1, is all about exposing what is hidden, uncovering mysteries and embracing unbelievable miracles. Matisyahu, the hometown Hasidic hero of New York City and a cultural icon for Jewish America, crafted his own light-filled musical mystery at the Brooklyn Bowl on Nov. 29, opening his nine-night Festival of Light tour with a nearly non-stop, two-hour set that covered the span of his career while peeking into the unknown future.

This show was the first spark, the shamash of Matisyahu's touring menorah. Let me explain: There are eight days of Hanukkah, which celebrates the miracle of one day's worth of oil lasting for eight days as the successful revolutionaries of the Maccabee family rededicated the once-desecrated Holy Temple. Modern Jews celebrate the holiday by lighting a nine-branched candelabra, called a menorah, the number of flames increasing with the number of days.

So why does the menorah have nine branches instead of eight? There's a special commandment that one may not use the lights of the menorah for any practical purpose other than proclaiming the miracle of the holiday. An additional flame, the shamash, is needed to symbolically help the other flames be revealed in the world. Hence, eight days, nine flames. So too, if each show in Matisyahu's Festival of Light is it's own unique flame, then the shamash, this opening show, was a helping of pure holiday fire.

Other parallels abound. Born Mathew Miller, Matisyahu took on his Hebrew name after becoming religious in 2001, and it is that moniker that has become a household code name for observant Judaism in the face of cultural and spiritual Jewish assimilation. In that context, there's nothing new about a Matisyahu today because there lived, more than 2,000 years ago, another Matisyahu, also a symbol for strengthening Jewish roots in a spiritual desert. He, of course, was the father of the Maccabean revolt that reclaimed the Second Temple in Jerusalem from unholy Hellenist hands and therefore created a new Jewish festival. — Josh Fleet (November 30, 2k10)
